| The Rising Sun |
While my husband and I were working in the garden, our neighbor came over to chat with us. He loves to watch the progress and see what new things we have done to the house. He asked what we were planting and I described the new plants I picked up from the nursery. He said, "Well if you were planting one of those new Redbuds, I would be jealous." My ears immediately perked up. My husband could see the wide eyed look on my face and I'm sure he was thinking, "Oh no, don't tell her that. Now she is going to have to get one!" When I asked our neighbor about this new variety, he informed me that it has different shades of green ranging from lime green (which he described as the "Martha Stewart" green) to deep green leaves on the same tree. He said it also had peachy orange colored leaves on it as well. After hearing that information, I knew I had to get one. Luckily, Milbergers in San Antonio had this new variety which is called, "The Rising Sun". The employee at the nursery said it would be a great understory tree and that it would need some shade. He also said the new growth is the most colorful.
After finding the perfect spot for our new tree, we immediately planted it. I can't wait to watch it bloom out and see the colorful leaves. Oh, and if I run into my neighbor, I'm going to tell him about my new tree. Jealous???

Lucky you! Of course I am jealous! I did read about this new tree and might just have to find a place for it here too.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading about your tree through the seasons.
Great post!
Thanks Shirley. I'm looking forward to seeing how this tree performs.
ReplyDeleteThat is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of this one. Hope it works well for you.
Linda - We added some root stimulator when we planted it so hopefully it will root quickly. It is already starting to push out new growth.
ReplyDeleteI bought 2 of the Pansy Redbuds last year, but I can always find room for a new plant as cool as this one. Is it as drought tolerant as the other varieties once established?
ReplyDeleteAlly - According to the information listed in the article, it is heat, cold and drought tolerant. I planted mine in dappled shade so it won't be in the searing sun. I also purchased a TX redbud, which I planted in full sun. I think the TX, Oklahoma and Mexican redbuds might be more drought tolerant.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had a redbud tree in her backyard, and they've always been special to me. Maybe this is the year for me to plant one.
ReplyDeleteMaggie - I've always wanted one. Mine is planted so I can see it outside my kitchen window.
