The finch fest is still in full swing, except now the American Goldfinches have decided to join in. There are usually around seven to eight birds on the feeder at one time. I normally refill the feeder every week, but lately it has been more like every couple of days.
I've also had the pleasure of watching a female Rufous hummer at the hummingbird feeder. Normally, I take my feeder down, but there is a woodpecker that is a sugar addict and can't get enough of the sugar water. I first spotted the Rufous on December 11th. I think there might even be a second Rufous visiting the feeder. Could this be a sign that we are in for a very mild winter in South Texas?
I'm so jealous of your goldfinches! I would love to have them in my yard. I have 2 rufous hummmers spending the winter in my yard too! I am also in south Texas.

Lorilee - It took them a while to find the feeder. It wasn't until I moved it close to the bird bath did they show up. I've heard several reports of Rufous hummers in the area. I just hope they make it through the winter.
ReplyDeleteWow, those finches are beautiful and look at them go after the feeder. I certainly hope that hummer means we have a mild winter. So far so good, but we have to get to mid-February to know for sure.
ReplyDeleteShirley - Aren't they pretty? My feeder is right outside my kitchen window. It sure makes dish washing less of a chore. You are right about the weather we have in February.
