Rainy Memorial Day Weekend

It has been a wet and rainy Memorial Day weekend. We were in need of some rain, however we just happened to get it all at the same time. Five inches within a 24 hour period is what registered on our rain gage. The rain helped us pinpoint the drainage issues in our garden. Some of our newly planted plants were uprooted. Even though we have long stretches of dry weather, we need to make accommodations for the flash floods.

Today I went out to the garden to see how it was holding up.  I'm so grateful for the rain, even if it did cause some damage to our garden.

White Spiderwort, Shrimp plants and Crinum Lilies

Hope you have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend!

  1. We got about 5" too and it did bring down loads of plants. And you are right about drainage. We never seem to be around when we get those gullywashers but it is good to see what happens when we do get torrential rain so we can address. Hope you have a nice Memorial Day celebration.

    1. Jenny,
Gullywashers is a good way to describe it. I'm just thankful we did not have any damage.

PS I love your Peter's Purple Bee Balm. Mine are getting pretty tall as well. I had no idea it got that tall. When I purchased the plant it was sprawling on the ground.

  2. Your garden looks so good despite the rain. It's so important to plan for these storms because they can cause so much damage when they happen. It's a surprise you only got 5" since you seem to be so close.

    1. Thanks Shirley. I was surprised the garden held up so well. I think we did get more than 5" of rain. The rain gage was completely full, so it may have been more.

  3. Here just West of Austin we got 5 inches but in two batches, so it wasn't too bad. A lot of the non-irrigated areas around the fringes of our property really needed the good soaking though I'm sure to see a lot of weedy response to the water. I was sorry to see so much flooding around the San Antonio area - I'm glad to read you sustained no major damage. Love your agapanthus - I tried those but the deer ate them to the ground.

    1. TexasDeb, Good to hear you guys got rain as well. It was starting to look really dry. In SA, we were getting ready to move into Stage 3 water restrictions. All the rain must have raised the Aquifer level.

I have the dwarf Agapanthus. They are so pretty when they bloom. Fortunately, we do not have to deal with the dear.

  4. Your garden is looking good. We had been getting some decent rain, but recently it seems that the storms are going around us. We could use some more again now.

    1. Thank you Jayne. It is always nice to get rain, just wish it was spread out over a couple of days and not all at once. Hopefully, more rain will fall in your direction. Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Hi Steph...glad you got some needed rain, but gee, 5" in 24 hours is a lot. Your flowers look wonderful. I love Pentas, but for some reason mine aren't doing well this year....yours look just beautiful. Your tomatos look yummy, and you must like hot stuff if you eat Serrano Peppers!!! :-P

    1. Thanks Christy. The Pentas seem to do better in the hot weather, although I have noticed they like a little shade throughout the day.

I planted 6 different cherry tomatoes this year. They are are all doing well and it looks like we are going to have a ton of them.

The weather isn't the only thing hot in South TX... so is the food:) The peppers are for us to make fresh salsa.

  6. Sorry to hear about your drainage issues. We've had our share of water problems over the years, but no problems this time. We racked up 2.5 wonderful inches. What a weekend! Me and my garden are both smiling.

  7. Rain, rain, glorious rain! 6.4" here in NW Austin in a 48 hr period - YAY! My Peter's Purple just started blooming today - it caught my eye from the back of the garden. I couldn't imagine what was so bright and had to go see. It's a pretty little thing. Not quite putting out the show that Jenny's is but maybe in a year or two? Happy Memorial Day, Steph.

    1. Yay! You got rain. Isn't Peter's Purple pretty? Mine is just starting to bloom as well. Those blooms look like aliens to me:) I had a heck of a time trying to find this plant, but it is the best Bee Balm I have found for my garden. Thanks for stopping by Cat.
